Manuel Gonzalez tightened his grip on the Moto2 World Championship with a commanding victory at Mugello, controlling the Italian Grand Prix from the front to claim his third win of the 2026 season.
Starting from pole position and already leading the standings, the Spaniard made the most of his strong record at the circuit, where he had also won in 2025. He converted his front-row start into an early advantage and was never seriously challenged thereafter, steadily building a cushion that he extended to a comfortable 5.327 seconds by the chequered flag. So secure was his position that Gonzalez had time to celebrate with a wheelie as he crossed the line.
The performance was a statement of intent from the championship leader at one of the calendar's most demanding venues. Mugello's combination of high-speed sweeps and hard braking zones tends to expose any weakness in a rider's package, yet Gonzalez looked in complete control throughout, managing his pace and his tyres without ever appearing to be under pressure.
Behind him, the battle for the remaining podium places provided the bulk of the on-track drama. Celestino Vietti gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about by securing second place, a popular result for the Italian on home soil, while Dani Holgado completed the rostrum in third after his own race-long fight in the chasing group.
For Gonzalez, the win does more than simply add to his victory tally.
