Jamie Coward's Road Racing Reset: Rapid Honda, Padgett's and a TT 2026 Return

After contemplating retirement following a 2024 crash, Jamie Coward returns to the Isle of Man TT in 2026 with a new Rapid Honda deal and the prospect of riding for Clive Padgett's iconic team.
Jamie Coward's Road Racing Reset: Rapid Honda, Padgett's and a TT 2026 Return

Key Takeaways

  • 1.We've got a couple of days testing out there on the big bike, and then hopefully back out again on the 600." The programme continues with the first three rounds of the British Superbike season as race preparation for the TT itself.
  • 2.Riding Angus Greenhall's Kawasaki, he qualified third fastest and ran within a whisker of the lap record on the 750.
  • 3."I was third fastest in qualifying at the Classic TT, and yeah, I feel like I've still got a lot more to give," he said.

For Jamie Coward, the 2026 Isle of Man TT is not just another race week on the Mountain Course. It is the line between a career that almost ended in 2024 and one that now has fresh backing, new machinery and the dream ride he waited years for.

Sitting down with Isle of Man TT Races for the 'Beyond the Paddock' series at the Ginger Hall pub, Coward was candid about how close he came to walking away. A crash at the 2024 TT left him with a broken little finger and a heavy concussion, and in the months that followed, he seriously considered retirement.

"I was contemplating retirement after the crash," Coward said. "I wasn't badly injured. I broke that little finger, but I banged my head quite hard and it took me a while to come around."

The comeback plan was practical. Coward raced at the Southern 100 and at Armoy to rebuild confidence, then targeted the Classic TT as the real test. Riding Angus Greenhall's Kawasaki, he qualified third fastest and ran within a whisker of the lap record on the 750.

"I was third fastest in qualifying at the Classic TT, and yeah, I feel like I've still got a lot more to give," he said. "If it weren't for Angus and the team, and the bike and the lap times I was doing, I might have stopped, but I was so close to the front."

Coward confirmed he has parted ways with KTS Racing after six years, a split he insisted was amicable and driven by a sponsor-led change of direction rather than any fallout.

"I've been with them for six years and I can't thank them enough for what they've done for me," he said. "Sometimes good things come to an end."

The landing zone is unusual. Rapid Honda is new to the roads, stepping up from a British Superbike programme, but Coward described the team's early investment as significant. V2 max testing in Southampton, structured strength work, a dedicated personal trainer and a nutritionist have all come on board since the deal was signed, alongside direct Honda support for the big-bike effort.

"The Honda Rapid team are taking us out to Spain, with obviously the affiliation with Honda," he said. "I think it's Andalucia circuit. We've got a couple of days testing out there on the big bike, and then hopefully back out again on the 600."

The programme continues with the first three rounds of the British Superbike season as race preparation for the TT itself.

Alongside the Rapid Honda ride, Coward has secured what he described as a dream phone call, a Supersport ride on Clive Padgett's bike. Padgett's is one of the most respected names in road racing, with a list of former riders that includes Bruce Anstey and Michael Dunlop.

"To be a get a phone call off Clive and be asked to ride his bikes, I was pretty gobsmacked at first and a bit overwhelmed, but I'm honoured and privileged to be able to say that I'm riding for Padgett's and Clive," Coward said.

The squad will skip the Northwest 200 for the Rapid Honda effort but will run the Padgett's bike there as a shakedown for TT specification. Coward is open about the ambition. Having pushed Michael Dunlop close on KTS machinery in previous seasons, he believes genuine podium chances return now he has comparable kit.

"I'm right in the mix," he said.
