A sold-out crowd at the NHRA Potomac Nationals presented by JEGS in Maryland was treated to one of the closest finishes in drag racing history, as Shawn Langdon edged Top Fuel teammate Doug Kalitta by the width of a heartbeat to cap a dominant weekend.
Langdon and Kalitta lined up side by side in the Top Fuel final for an all-Kalitta Motorsports showdown, and the result could hardly have been tighter. Kalitta got away first with a 0.052-second reaction time to Langdon's 0.056, but the championship points leader reeled in the reigning world champion and slipped past right at the stripe, his run of 3.762 seconds at 334.90 mph taking the win by a barely believable 0.0002 of a second, a margin of roughly one inch.
The victory completed a third straight national event win for Langdon, the first time he has managed such a streak in his Top Fuel career, and tightened his hold on the championship lead at exactly the right moment.
In Funny Car, Austin Prock finally opened his 2026 account, defeating John Force Racing's Jack Beckman in the final round. Prock's 3.956-second pass at 324.20 mph was enough to hold off Beckman, who could only respond with a 3.971 at 323.50. The win lifted some of the pressure on a driver who had been quick all season without converting that speed into a trophy.
Greg Anderson rounded out the headline car-class winners by taking the Pro Stock title for the event, adding another result to one of the most decorated resumes in the category.
The most historic moment of the day, however, came in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Angie Smith won for the first time in nearly four years, and in doing so recorded the 200th victory by a female competitor across the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Smith backed up her milestone with a weekend-best run of 6.683 seconds at 201.52 mph to defeat Ryan Oehler in the final, a performance that ensured her name will be remembered well beyond the result sheet.
It made for a Potomac Nationals that delivered on every front, from a Top Fuel final decided by inches to a landmark win that carried significance for the wider sport. With Langdon surging, Prock back in the winners' circle and Smith writing herself into the record books, the event underlined how unpredictable and tightly fought the 2026 NHRA season has become as the campaign rolls on.
