Kimi Antonelli completed a hat-trick of victories with a hard-fought win at the 2026 Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, May 3, beating Lando Norris to the flag by 3.264s. The result also made Antonelli the first driver to convert his first three career pole positions into wins, underlining a blistering start to his campaign.
The race burst into life at the start as polesitter Antonelli, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc went three-wide into Turn 1. Both the Mercedes and Red Bull locked up under braking, and Verstappen later spun, tumbling down the order in the opening laps.
Early incidents for Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly triggered Safety Car interventions, compressing the pack and setting up a strategic fight at the front. Despite forecasts of heavy afternoon storms prompting organizers to bring lights out forward by three hours, the weather stayed dry at the new start time.
Antonelli had earned pole after rebounding from a difficult Sprint on Saturday, edging a resurgent Verstappen to the front of the grid. When the tyre blankets came off, every car was on medium tyres bar Hadjar on hards, pointing most towards a straightforward one-stop in the expected dry conditions.
The lead then rotated several times as the field settled. Antonelli later reclaimed the advantage from Leclerc, while Norris, Oscar Piastri and Verstappen all enjoyed brief stints in clean air amid pit phases and Safety Car timing.
As the laps ticked down, the race distilled into a two-car fight. Norris shadowed Antonelli throughout the final stint but could not force an opening, with the leader managing his pace to the line in 1:33:19.273. Piastri secured third, 27.092s behind the winner, after a frantic closing phase.
Leclerc’s late spin opened the door for Mercedes’ George Russell to take fourth, while Verstappen clawed past Leclerc at the line for fifth, 48.949s off the winner. Post-race, Leclerc received a 20-second penalty in lieu of a drive-through for repeatedly cutting the track on the final lap, dropping him to eighth.
Behind the leading quintet, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton took sixth, with Franco Colapinto banking valuable points for Alpine in seventh. Williams celebrated a double score as Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon completed the top 10.
Just outside the points, Haas’ Ollie Bearman finished 11th ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto and the second Haas of Esteban Ocon. Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad came home 14th, followed by the Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso (15th) and Lance Stroll (17th), with the Cadillac pair of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas in 16th and 18th respectively.
Four drivers retired: Hadjar and Gasly after their early crashes, Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson following contact with Gasly, and Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg, who also pitted to retire his car.
What’s next: The championship heads to Canada on May 22-24, where Antonelli will chase a fourth straight win and McLaren’s Norris and Piastri look to convert pace into a first victory of the season.
